STU DOHERTY

Stu Doherty was born in Australia and now lives and paints at Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia, his work observes and records moments of unexpected beauty from the landscape that surround his studio where the sea meets the rock on Birpai land.

His practice is predominantly watercolour, gouache and graphite on paper, focusing on the regional landscape and native flora of coastal NSW.

Doherty has exhibited at QCAD Gallery Brisbane, Brunswick Street Gallery Melbourne, Corner Store Gallery Orange, Glasshouse Regional Gallery Port Macquarie, Aspire Gallery Paddington QLD and Lethbridge Gallery in QLD. He took first place for watercolour at the 2022 Bonny Hills Art Prize and was a finalist in the 2023 Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize.

 

After graduating from the National Art School: East Sydney Tech Design Studio in the 90’s and having a successful fashion design career spanning decades that included teaching Illustration and Design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design and designing menswear for Australia’s top fashion labels and department stores. Doherty now paints full time from his studio in Port Macquarie, he has also been instrumental in the creation and continued development of an award winning local artist Co-op: The Wauchope Creative Hub where Doherty showcases his work and also regularly teaches watercolour painting.
