STU DOHERTY

Stu Doherty is an Australian watercolour artist living and painting from his studio at Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW.

His practice is predominantly watercolour, gouache and graphite on paper, focusing on the regional landscape and native flora.

Doherty has exhibited at QCAD Gallery Brisbane, Brunswick Street Gallery Melbourne, Corner Store Gallery Orange, Glasshouse Regional Gallery Port Macquarie, Aspire Gallery Paddington QLD and Lethbridge Gallery in QLD. He took first place for watercolour at the 2025 Bonny Hills Art Prize and was a finalist in the 2023 Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize.
After graduating from the National Art School: East Sydney Tech Design Studio in the 90’s and having a successful fashion design career spanning decades that included teaching Illustration and Design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design plus designing menswear for Australia’s top fashion labels and department stores. Doherty now paints full time from his studio in Port Macquarie, he has also been instrumental in the creation and continued management of an award winning local artist run Co-op: The Wauchope Creative Hub where Doherty regularly teaches watercolour painting.
